According to senior DTC officials, the facility will be initially available at four depots — Dwarka Sector 2, Dwarka Sector 8, Seemapuri and Dilshad Garden — where the machines have already been installed.

The transport body signed a memorandum of understanding with Indraprastha Gas Limited — the sole distributor of CNG in Delhi — in this regard. At present, IGL has its gas dispensing facility at 30 DTC depots; the figure is likely to increase to 39 in next three months.

‘After selecting the desired service and service provider to either pay a bill or recharge a phone, the user can type his mobile number and proceed with the transaction by inserting the required money in the machine’s designated slot,’ a DMRC official said.

The machine accepts currency notes up to the denomination of Rs.1,000 and generates a receipt after the transaction, added the official.

At Metro stations in Jahangirpuri, Dilshad Garden, Anand Vihar and Noida City Centre, the machines have been installed in areas which people can approach without paying a charge or buying a Metro ticket.

The remaining 16 machines have been installed in those areas of stations where users would have to buy a ticket or pay a charge. These stations include Karol Bagh, Dwarka Sector 9, Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Akshardham and Central Secretariat.

It has recommended changes to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) proposal that had earlier been cleared by the Delhi cabinet.

The budget for the third phase, sanctioned by the state cabinet, is Rs 21,468 crore. The transport department is currently in charge of developing an extensive project report for the new corridors.

The report will have to be submitted to the state government. While the DMRC plan has 15 points where passengers can change over to another line, the transport department’s plan has 25. The six corridors proposed for phase III will cover an area of 70 km, including a 39 km underground stretch. The transport department’s plan is to bring the outer parts of the city within the Metro network.

It’s recommendations include extending the Mukundpur-Rajouri Garden line to Dhaula Kuan and connecting the Dilshad Garden and Anand Vihar stations. It also wants the Central Secretariat-Red Fort corridor to end at ITO, reducing costs by Rs 1,288 crore.

The Central Information Commission (CIC) has ordered a Delhi school to disclose the answer sheets of a Class IX student who had failed in his annual paper this year i.e. 2007-2008.

Moshin, a student studying in class IX of Government Boys Senior Secondary School in Dilshad Garden (East Delhi), failed in three of the six subjects in his annual exams.

“It was unbelievable that he failed in his class promotion examinations. My nephew had said he had done well. He was not even given his report card,” said Arif, the boy’s uncle.

On April 1, Mohsin filed an RTI application requesting the school to disclose to him the marks obtained in all six subjects.

“I also wanted to know that even if I failed, why was I denied a report card,” said Mohsin.

He also sought information on the pass percentage of Class IX and the rules for granting grace marks along with details of students who were given the same.

The school did not respond but, after one month and eight days, it finally agreed to provide the information on the order of the commission.

An RTI application requesting the disclosure of marks in all six subjects was filed by him. He also sough the details of teachers who had carried out the evaluation process of the answer sheets, the pass percentage of Class IX and the rules for granting marks.

In reply to the RTI application, the CIC also asked the school to disclose the answer sheets of all his classmates.

The 3.1-km Shahdara-Dilshad Garden line will be the first link to become operational in Phase II of Delhi Metro. “About 95 per cent of civil work is over. If things go as planned, we may be able to open the line earlier than the scheduled December 2008 deadline. We are yet to work out the exact date of inauguration, but it could be moved ahead by a few months,” says Anuj Dayal, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Giving reasons for the speedy completion of work on the stretch, another DMRC official said contractors for the link were part of the Phase I construction team. “During the first phase, it was a learning experience. We had to keep learning even as work was being carried out. In the second phase, the experience gained during the first phase came in handy and it also helped that the stretch covers a little over 3 km,” he added.

With most of the construction work accomplished, the focus now is on completing work related to signalling, telecommunications, electrification and finishing of the stations. There will be three elevated stations on the new line: Mansarover Park, Jhilmil Colony and Dilshad Garden. Each station will have four escalators and three lifts and will be 20 metres off the ground because of the existing flyover at Shahdara. Parking space has been allocated at Jhilmil Colony and Dilshad Garden, but because of congestion and lack of adequate space there will be no parking at Mansarovar Park.
